Final Blog Summary

I will have to say that I really enjoyed the class. I found it to be as equally challenging as I expected. I was somewhat intimidated coming into this class. To start off I am 42 yrs old. I graduated high school in 1986. So me coming back to school has been an awesome challenge coupled with alot of fear and doubts to overcome. I remember taking a computer class in high school. I believe it was DOS back then on the green screen. Any way I really didn’t get into them much then and have mostly stayed away from them except on a personal use. So to take this class was going to show me alot about where I was, as well as where technology had risen too and if I was going to be able to handle it.

The class started out cool, Learning about the different language generations. It was cool to program the pseudo computer and actually see the steps of the program executed. I thought building a computer was really interesting. Like I mentioned earlier I have not kept up with computer, so really had NO idea of what the costs would be. I was really shocked at how cheap it would be to  build your own computer. It also helped me to see the technology available today.

Next came my favorite part of the whole class. And that was HTML. I really got into that. I was really intimidated by it at first. When we were given the assignment to build a web page, I thought to myself, “This ought to be good!!” But surprisingly it was not that difficult at all. I enjoyed being able to actually write the code. It was really cool designing my web page. At the end I thought it turned out pretty good. It may be able to turn into a source of income one day. That would be COOL!!!! The remaining chapters were very beneficial to really understand where all this computer Gig fits together. The LEGO project was Cool. It took awhile to get the program worked out but eventually the Robot worked. At the end we were able to program the robot to complete a designed course of tracking a line, sensing a wall, stopping and turning etc… That was a neat project, that could really turn into something I like also. The program was really cool that was used to program the robot!! So after seeing a little bit in each area, I like the choice that I made as a “Computer Programmer”

Thanks for everything Dr. Brown, I will look forward to working with you in the future!!!

Virtual Reality

To be completely honest, I am not a big GAME player! I am however starting to get more into it. I went online and checked out some different games that were free to download.I was not that impressed with the graphics. The game were somewhat boring. If I had the right king of controller it would make a world of difference.. I did check out second life. That was pretty awesome graphics there. It got my attention after taking the quiz what that was all about. I was impressed, though it seemed complicated I did not like the real money idea. These are the two avatars that I liked! I could not resist the HULK. I thought it was really cool with some awesome color to it! . Well looking forward to the end of the semester.

AI Artificial Intelligence

Posted in CSIT1110 on November 21, 2009 by Ric Anthony

I really liked the AI series. My wife and I were at Super Wal-Mart shopping and I found the movie AI. It was ok, I guess it was made about 8 years ago so the effects were not that great. I did however get a good idea of some of the capabilities that AI can offer. I think it would be real cool to somehow get involved with that line of work!! I will look forward to the next class and lab. I will be excited to get close to the end of the semester.

I really liked the class this week. The robots are very cool. We did not get much time to play & program the lego robots. The video during class about the Matrix was very cool though. I have worked with robots in previous jobs, and have been able to program them through PLC. There function was limited to only the intial task it was made to do. I think the robots will be more intergrated in the manufacturing industy as time goes on. I am looking forward to this weeks class. Hopefully we will have more class time to program them.

This was a interesting chapter. I was able to see the history of hacking laid out over the years. It is amazing to me how professional this has become. I have a hard time understanding why something can’t be permanently done about this problem. Why can’t these problems be solved. Yea, we have firewalls, security software, etc.., but their still always seems to be something new happening here. I think the best job ever would be able to hack for a living. I have  a friend who works for the CIA. All he does is hack all day long. It is frightening to hear of the stories that he tells me. He showed me one day how easy he could hack my bank account, then showed me how to avoid this as much as possible. The scariest thing is that there is not a fix all answer. Once one problem is fixed another one shows up.

Alice Post/ Randy Pausch

Posted in CSIT1110 on October 25, 2009 by Ric Anthony

I really think the Alice programming is going to be real cool. I have started to work on a little bit of it, but not much. From what I can see, iy looks like a lot of fun! It will be cool to create my very own enviroment. I think it is cool to be able to see the result of the written program immediately, that way if something is wrong it can be seen right away, and fixed. It is also neat to be working with 3D images. I started checking out the tutorial! It is cool to be able to change your program to what you want it to do. The graphics are pretty basic though! Will have to wait to see what else this Alice can do. It seems to be somewhat limited to what’s been pre-programmed. Maybe there will be a way to write the code to perform our own moves in addition to the one’s already installed in the program.

As far as the video, it was very inspiring to see someone fight through an illness like Randy did. It was pretty amazing to see  how good of shape he was in considering his condition. That was really impressive. Hell, he is in better shape than I am!!!  He has a pretty good sense of humor. Not one that I would enjoy watching all of the time though! All in all it was OK.

My View Of The Web NOW!!!

Posted in CSIT1110 on October 16, 2009 by Ric Anthony

I will have to admit that I was a little intimidated of this assignment!! Once I got into it, it started to make sense. I didn’t realize that I could actually have my own page posted to a server to be viewed by everyone! That was really cool. The process of doing it was somewhat confusing though! I had assumed that there was a fee involved when doing something like this. I am really impressed though, that I was able to get it to work! I guess once I had it posted, the thoughts started to come to me of how would someone actually pull this up at random. What I mean by this is; If I had a an idea(let’s say something to sell, service ,or whatever) once I had it posted, how would people find it? What other things would be necessary to generate HITS on the page? Maybe we will get into this with more detail. Regardless it was very rewarding for me! It just lets me know that there are millions of web pages on the web that people like me can write and post. VERY COOL!!!!!

I have bee cursed by the SWINE Flu. So I have not be able to do much over the last few days. I have started writING MY web page and have found it to be really cool. I had no idea before that it was this easy to create. When I say easy I mean that the code for creating certain things on the page is not that complex. The page source of a web page, is something that I learned about it is neat to be able to pull the code for a certain page and see how it was written. The code it self, was a little awkward to get use to writing. I guess once I figured out the format, it became easier to write. I am looking forward to learning more about writing web pages. It would be cool to really learn this and design web pages for people to earn a little extra money!!

The Pseudo Computer

Pseudo Computer

Once again I was very confused at first. I spent the whole class lecture paying attention, trying to soak all of the information in at once. I understood bits and pieces of the lecture, but, it really didn’t sink in. I am not sure at what point, but suddenly it started to make sense.  The step-by-step method that was explained in class HELPED!! I had adopted that process long ago in algebra, by doing equations, one step at a time.

I think one thing that helped, was to understand the RULES of the computer. After I was told that nothing could be written from a register, it helped me to understand the process, that needed to be taken, in order to RUN the program. After I identified myself with the commands and started to understand them, it became easier. I still don’t completely understand the loop command. I understood how to use loop, in the adding and subtracting problems, but I think it could be more to that command than I see right now. I will wait to find out.

It was really cool to be able to STEP the process. BY stepping the process, I was able to see the mistakes I made writing the program. Once, I was able to identify where the program stopped, I could easily recognize the era in the written program.

After writing a few programs, I see that the language is not very “User Friendly”. What I mean is this, it is a very complex process to add two numbers. By having to move numbers back and forth it is easy to make a mistake. I also noticed that if you wanted to do a multiplication or division problem, the program would be really complex. This computer seems to be mainly set up for easy addition and subtraction. I am sure there would be other advantages of this type of program. I do recall Dr. Brown saying that it was still used in some programming today.

It is really cool to write a program, NOW!! I know there is a long way to go.
