Windows 8, or no?

Filed under: Thoughts — Hannah Campbell at 2:04 am on Thursday, April 11, 2013

After some research, I have found conflicting opinions of Windows 8.The first time I had heard about it was from a friend who said it was like Vista. Then I heard that my brother-in-law had it and it was “awesome”. The same votes true online, some seem to like it, but apparently it’s not doing the PC market any favors. According to an article on Mashable, due to the lack of the start button on Windows 8 and many other features, there was a 13.7% shipment decline (though it does include HP and Dell in the decline). (Wasserman) Now there is discussion from Microsoft about combining Windows 8 with the Windows Phone and calling it Windows Blue. All have to say is: I’m happy with my Windows 7 and don’t plan to change anytime soon. Microsoft is trying too hard.

How Social Media affects Business.

On Thursday we were virtually face-to-face on Google Hangout with Mary N. The discussion included websites helpful to businesses online. We learned about Trip Advisor, Facebook, Google + Local, Yelp, Foursquare and more! Many of the new social networking sites are a great way to get a business greater amount of virtual traffic, viewing your information, and learning you have a business that may provide a service they’re looking for.

What I thought of the video on Nicholas Carr’s “The Shallows”

Nicholas Carr, whom wrote “The Shallows: What Internet is doing to our Brains”, talked about his book. His book is about how the internet is affecting our abilities to have deeper thoughts and instinctual behaviors to function. He thinks as we become consumed in online activity, our ability to hold more information and to keep up with our surroundings is becoming less.

I hope his information has come from reliable sources such as a study conducted or doctors who are well versed in the human brain, as well as behavioral psychologists. Since he quoted a study from a high school teacher, that’s not a real study.

Regardless, it seems it may be true. I’ve found that I’m constantly checking e-mails and Facebook throughout the day. I haven’t noticed any less “memory”, I’ve always forgotten where my keys are as I’m holding them. I have found people, like my grandparents are capable of remembering much more information and they don’t use much internet as kids.

What is Google+?

Filed under: Thoughts — Hannah Campbell at 9:31 pm on Sunday, November 25, 2012

Google+ is a social networking site through Google, the worlds leading search engine. Not only does Google have their search engine, e-mail (which you’ll need one through them for a smart phone), blog, and many other options; but it has an networking site very similar to Facebook. With it’s interface being easy to navigate and set up, it’s very similar in how you post to Facebook and follow posts. It also allows users to follow each other, similar to Twitter, though there isn’t a way to set it to private. The best part of Google+ is no advertisements! The downfall is the user base is small compared to Facebook, though I find that as a positive because I don’t like people and their drama filled lives littering my Facebook wall. I also find that the lack of App requests with Google+ is a welcomed change! Unless you buy a new smart phone that requires a new e-mail address through Google, the sign up is not very user friendly.

The overall review rating for Google+ would be a 3 out of 5. It may have wanted to compete with Facebook and Twitter, but it doesn’t have enough plus’s to invite more users. Additionally, not many people know it exists; I have had a smartphone and account with Google for a few years now and did not realize they had their own social networking site as well.

What company would you like?

I signed onto Facebook today to do this assignment finally, and typed different companies that I have used or want to use into the search bar. The companies I chose are Apple, Meyer Hatchery, Chili’s, Breyers, and Home Depot. Out of the 5 companies I’d probably “like” the last 4 respectively. Meyer Hatchery always has fun chances to win free stuff all the time, and I have won 15 baby chicks from them too! Chili’s is always giving free appetizers and desserts away, so I “like” them. Breyers has ice cream, and pictures of ice cream; who wouldn’t want to go to their page to see ice cream? I also go to Home Depot a lot, so “liking” them wouldn’t hurt. I already “like” Chili’s and Meyer Hatchery, but may go ahead and “like” those other two pages to see about any possible deals they give out.

What is a SlideRocket? Nothing dirty!

Filed under: Thoughts — Hannah Campbell at 9:59 am on Saturday, November 3, 2012

The website I decided to try using was SlideRocket. SlideRocket is a very nifty website designed to allow users to make their own slide shows without needing any software downloaded to their computer. One may use this site for uploading already started slide shows from a computer program or make their own using the themes available. It was very simplex and had plenty of themes to choose from as far as creating a presentation quickly and easily.

In using this tool I found it much easier to use that PowerPoint Office. It’s easy to create a new account and navigation was user-friendly, and I would recommend it to anyone who’s ever struggled with any other power point presentation building software.

Update: I would like to add that after creating an account with SlideRocket using my e-mail address has increased my inbox spam.

Well, what the Tweet is this for?!

Filed under: Thoughts — Hannah Campbell at 5:34 pm on Sunday, October 21, 2012

My post today is blogging about a classmates recent Tweet regarding social media. First, I would like to start out with the fact I dislike blogging and Tweeting (Twitter) as much as I hate scrubbing the toilet (if you catch my drift). The Tweet refers to Twitter having over 100 million active users. My conclusion is that people have way too much time on their hands!

I am a student at Pellissippi State. Pellissippi is located in Knoxville. My favorite web site is about back yard chickens.

Have you ever done this before?!

Social Media

Filed under: Thoughts — Hannah Campbell at 5:39 pm on Sunday, October 7, 2012

I researched for ways to use Twitter effectively. There is not much information out there specifically for Twitter, they’re more broad to social media as a whole than just one form. I did learn that the most important thing is to “focus on the most valuable part of any Twitter community from the moment you log in: people” (Krisit Hines)  which is a good piece of advice.
