The End

So I know that I am not supposed to just sit here and go on about how much I loved/hated the class, but I have to say it at least once… This class was absolutely awesome!! Dr. Brown is an amazing teacher and your lucky if you have to take this class…. Ok, now that my tangent is over with I will go on to explain why I think the way I do. Within the first week of class I knew that it was going to be a blast. We started off with our first project about Binary. I had heard about it, but frankly did not understand a single thing about why there were all of these 0 and 1′s. I got a little confused with some of the information but by the end I could write it out and understand what numbers it was representing and how I would end up needing to use it in our future projects.

Now I am not trying to just go through and highlight about every project that we did this semester, but hardware was a big thing for me. I started to realize in this week just how much I loved the Hardware aspects of computers. I am going for Programming, but I would think about changing my degree if I didn’t have to start all over again. I liked how with our class that we could use hands on ways to learn about all of the information that was given to us. It never was like in other classes how you have a packet given to you with diagrams and have to memorize it. There were always videos and links to sites and other important resources. The videos were always my favorite though. Especially when we covered software and hacking. I watched probably every video available about Microsoft and Apple, as well as about the history of hacking. Did you know that hacking first started by the use of phones and how to use a prize out of a captain crunch cereal box to make certain pitches to break into the phone lines?? Now there were some less “fun” portions of the class like databases. No my opinion I just don’t like databases so the subject for me was blah. But another fun point of the class was Scratch. I am going for programming so of course I was happy as a kid on Christmas when I was able to make a program for a project. I made a game that was marshins showing you around there world and they even danced!! Now how could that not be fun! But I learned about the next week harder than everyone else. We went over hacking and I learned real fast first hand. I got a virus on my computer that ate up half my hard drive taking my Scratch project with it!! So i definitely became efficient in Scratch. But for hacking, after my episode with my own personal experience, it was really interesting Dr.Brown put up links for this section and he even showed us sites like hackthissite.org that teach you about hacking. It was really cool I went and joined the site and learned a lot of stuff from it. But they never promoted hacking in a negative way! Which made it nice cause I didn’t have to worry about someone trying to hack my computer from the site and it was completely safe. It goes to show that Dr. Brown doesn’t put the links on there to bore the snot out of you they are actually really fun!

Now two other things that stand out the most to me the most out of the class that were important were Robotics and Virtual Reality. With Robotics I learned a lot! We got to build a robot from tiny Lego pieces and program them to follow a black line on a track! I felt so proud after putting all that hard work into it! Don’t laugh though, its not as easy as you would think! Plus with virtual reality we got to play around with a program like Alice or Greenfoot. I chose Alice, because I just despise Java, but I went through and followed the tutorial in Alice and by the end I had a ice skater doing a whole routine with an audience that applauded when she finished and a crazy snow man that would scare off everyone and eat the ice skater!! haha. So needless to say this class teaches you so much about computers and the use of different aspects of the computer world. I know that I use what I have learned in this class every day and will use it while continuing on with this degree. Almost everything now is done by or with computers and I have learned more from this semester in this class than I have in my 3 years of attending classes here. I hope that everyone else has enjoyed this class as much as I did.

Virtual Reality

So I play a few games, but this semester I haven’t really had much time. I normally play Halo & Assassins Creed. I’m not too much into the gaming with World of Warcraft or anything like that. I just don’t have the time or money right now. Don’t get me wrong I do enjoy it though. I play these games to get a break from reality. They can give a person the sense of an out of body experience. There are even the cases that these second lives can actually be worth money to people. I think that it gives people the ability to act like they truly want to. It lets people show there true self’sand allows users to sometimes also create the surroundings that they want to be in. I definitely think that it can lead is in a good direction in advancements later on with the technology that is used, it will just depend on how far it can really take us.

AI

So this week we built our robots which was a blast. I had alot of fun putting the hardware for the robot together. I didn’t enjoy the programming as much which was odd for me, but it was still interesting. My group also tried to make a llama but unfortunately we didn’t have enough time to put it all together and the other group just tore it apart. Then on the last day of robotics Dr. Brown informed me that ours was broken so we had to go and re-image the whole device. So it was quite eventful. The rest of the week we covered artificial intelligence and it was definitely interesting. I loved all the movies about the robot that Honda built, Asimo. I think its so cute and awesome that they have almost given it some sort of sense of a person to be able to learn and distinguish the differences in objects. I think in time we will have robots that have artificial intelligence. I guess that next question will be if they will kill off human kind. haha

Robotics

So this week was an absolute blast! I loved working with the mindstorm robots; I liked them so much I even told my fiance I wanted one for Christmas! haha. It was fun and interesting to see how simple they had the programming on robots and how easy it was to make different designs. My group has worked well together and we even found directions how how to make a llama that can spit balls out. It will be fun to see how next week goes since I know we will get into more detail with them later. In aspect of thinking about the robots I just wondered how detailed you can get into the software aspect of programming with these robots Im excited to see!

Security

So this week was actually a lot of fun. I loved the information on hacking and I even signed up on hackthissite.org. Ive only done 2 of the hacking programs, but it was a lot of fun! Other than that with viruses, worms, and Trojans those things are just nasty!!! I learned this first hand this week because somehow I ended up getting them on my computer and they attached themselves to my executable programs and then went and deleted half of my hard drive including my Scratch program! I know its terrible, but I will recover. haha. Anyways, I don’t know why people create those things they are just mean. Now hacking I think is fun for a recreational past time, but I would never use it for evil. Anyways, this class just keeps getting to be more fun every week. Of course I am a so called “geek” as my finance puts it and was mesmerized watching the video about hacking and how they first started with phones! Hope everyone else is enjoying it as much as I am!

Scratch

So i definitely have had fun playing around with scratch this week. I’m in other programming classes right now so it was really interesting to program with this software. It has not been easy to figure out what to do for my project though. I just cant make up my mind! haha.. Anyways, so the lecture with Randy Pausch was really cool. I liked how he was so inspired almost in the fact that this was to be the “the last lecture”. It takes a great person to be able to do that. Let alone I played around with the Alice software he created and it was awesome. It made it easy to work with the software. This week was really fun. Now granite I know better things are to come, but I hate to say it, but I wish the test wasn’t so soon!

Databases

So this week we got to finally put our web sites on the server. It was very interesting in how all of this works. I liked the ease of it though. Writing in HTML was I think one of the easiest things that we have done, but I did have some issues with getting my pictures to display correctly. It was fun though. The other part of class covering databases was a breeze too. I have taken access which is a software which helps you to create a database. So I lucky knew must of what was being discussed. Now despite how easy this week was I gave myself a challenge with having strep throat with all the work. It was quite interesting in how much that made a difference. But I’m looking forward to next week now! Hope the class stays this much fun!

HTML

So this week we worked on HTML. It was actually interesting, because i had no idea but the designs and such that I had done to my facebook and myspace were actually these tags! I thought that was pretty cool. I  had no idea I already knew how to do it. The site that we have to create is coming along pretty well and I’m excited to see the end result. Other than that this week has been a pretty easy one. :) Thank goodness, because my programming classes are just piling up with work. At least this class is made to be fun. My other classes its fun, because I love what I’m doing but this class is by far my favorite.

ALS and Software

So this week, Im just going to start off by saying that coding is just much more fun when its not written in an ALS form. I didn’t have any issues with ALS this week and once I understood the last program in our assignment (thanks to Mr. Brown) it made perfect sense. Its odd to think that somehow we can actually communicate with our computers and programs every day and not know a thing about whats happening when we click a button on our screen. Needless to say, this just excites me and is one of my favorite things about computers. I know that’s a little odd, but for me its my addiction.

Every week we have covered something that’s so new, but also ties into something we have learned before. The concepts of the actual working internally in the computer with the software are coming together for me. I have a little harder time with the hardware aspects of a computer, but like I said before, my love is for the programming and software. The binary code was a little on the boring side but with only two numbers its still amazing you can make a computer so many things!

Now this week made everything click together even better. I understand now how everything works together and how particular aspects of a computer are controlled by certain programs and on. But I will just say this (and I think I have stated this before) I am a Microsoft lover! haha. So when we had all the links about Bill Gates and even Steve Jobs I went crazy. I watched all the clips and even went looking for more myself. Now granite I have never owned anything that was made by Apple, but my mother loves it. I do have to admit that it is definitely true that Microsoft and Apple are complete opposites and both have there pros and cons. But each to their own. I don’t know if anyone else has ever noticed this, but on the clip with both of them together you can almost see the aspects of the companies radiating from them. Like the laid back appearance of Steve Jobs and how Apple is a much more laid back, “Cooler” version of software while Bill Gates had a much more professional atmosphere about him. This could just be my opinion, but I thought that was kind of awesome.

So anyways, now that I am through with my tangent I would like to say that this weeks lesson has been awesome and definitely interesting!!! I hope everyone else had this much fun!

Hardware

So this week, as everyone knows we have been working on building a computer. Now from my perspective I thought that this would be a crazy thing to try to do in a week. Surprisingly, it was not too much over my head. It seems like the technology in general has made this task much easier. Anyways, it has been very interesting and kinda fun. Especially, since I had missed a day of class and have been attempting to teach this to myself. haha.

So my computer that I have now is an HP Pavillion and in my opinion it is the best thing I could have ever purchased! Plus, it was not expensive at all. See I had been told that you get what you pay for with computers and was worried that maybe I was going to be disappointed with what I got. I actually chose my computer by going through the site and looking at only the top-rated. I know it kinda sounds weird not really paying to much detail to the aspects of the computer, except for the memory, but it seemed to work well for me and with the assignment I decided to take my past experience and apply it. So with this computer I did not buy the most expensive, fastest, or a computer for gaming I just created a computer out of the best possible parts as well as the top-rated. I have realized to learn from other peoples experience and this seems one occasion that it works very well for. So here is my list of parts for my computer.

So for putting a computer together I would have everything you need set out in a space that you can work in. First, you take the motherboard and outside of the case add the CPU, CPU cooler, and memory. This is so that your not trying to work in such a small space and nothing will get damaged in the process. Then you add the connector to the motherboard for all your ports. After doing this you will then slide the mother board in place and line everything up in your case and keep it in place with wide thread screws.

The next process, is to put in the hard drive. It is easier to take the hard drive case out then working on it inside the case. The hard drive will slide right into the hard drive case and screw into place. You will then slide the hard drive case into the actual computer case and screw it in.

The optical drive comes next, with this all you have to do is slide it into its correct spot inside the case and screw it in. After this you will connect the front panel connectors (such as the power switch, reset switch, and hard drive light) and plug them into the mother board.

After the front panel connectors you plug in all the ports (for example the USB, firewire, audio, etc.) into the motherboard. Next, is the power supply. This should slide right into the case and screw in.

After putting the power supply in place you place the video card into its slot. the you proceed to plug in all the power cords into their parts that will need power to function. The you take the other side and connect them to the actual power supply.

You can the install Windows and then if everything checks out go back and clean up your wiring. If you are done at this point then just install your drivers and everything is complete!

*Complete list of parts and their links. Also, including a reason why I chose the part.
