Is the internet already a global conscience?

At what point does the internet become so valuable that it can be considered a global human conscience? Perhaps it already is. Consider this: If you needed to do an assignment for school, where would you get your sources? Sure you could go to the library, or you may even have a set of encyclopedias on your shelf at home. But unless they were printed with information that gathered today, they’ll be out of date. How many man hours have been spent adding information, sharing it on the internet? I’ll bet the internet holds millions of lifetimes worth of information already at this point. Is it fair to say that without the internet your ability to think is now crippled? Lets put two people in a room together. One person is sitting with nothing, and the other with a computer connected to the internet. Ask them a question. Who is most likely to have the right answer? The internet so valuable that having the ability to add to it, and take from it should be considered a right. That’s right, the internet is more than just a way to communicate, it is the sum of all communication. The computers that are connected to the internet (with the people behind them) fire off data and receive it to and from around the globe constantly. To cut someone or something off from the internet is akin to separating them from their brain.

IQ

How do you explain the reason for needing reason? How do you explain to a machine that the red balloon that it sees is not actually dangerous even if something else that is red might be. The ability for a computer to program itself based on its surroundings is how I think we need to approach this conundrum. If the machine can ask itself about that balloon. It’s red yes, but is it just a toy floating away instead of some deadly creature coming at me? While I was writing this I came across a post on the nvidia website about using a gpu to offload ai tasks from the cpu. Very awesome!

Randy Pausch’s last lecture and Scratch.

I have watched this in the past but seeing it again was just as inspiring as the first time. Doing the work you are required to do, going a little further than you need to, and not being a total fool about it goes a long way!

My first impression while using Scrach is that they have done a good job making it easy to work with the different basic concepts of programming. Simply dragging pictures to code loops makes it pretty easy to at least start working on basic programs. Easily being able to look at other peoples work can expand on ideas and help you learn how to use the different functions available. I have used the software that comes with Lego Mindstorms and this is pretty similar. While playing with it I have found that it’s not perfect though. If you use broadcast and two things happen at the same time the program misses one of them and your counters don’t work right. A minor issue that I’ve resolved by randomly delaying the broadcast by a small amount!

HTML

We went over some of the basics of html and different types of networks this week. Talked about a few different types of protocols. Started to play with style sheets. I’ve been missing out on some of the coolest changes. I’ll be working on my website over the week, going to make my categories Lego, Programming, and something else I suppose.

week four: Revenge of the low level code

I completed the assignments for this week. Wound up locking up my browser while doing the quiz. I was playing with Jump and found it quite fun to watch the machine freak out! Overall I think that the lessons from the past few weeks have added up to a good understanding of the history of computers and how they operate. Of course theres always so much information that could be used something is bound to be left out. With that said, I think that everything tied together just fine.
