we’re blogging how we explore technology in the teaching/learning process
On June 23, I will be presenting a short workshop on Google and Image tools for the Google Tools Workshop sponsored by the Tennessee Board of Regents and hosted at Walters State Community College. We will be covering:
My resources are linked below as are some work files we will use during the presentation.
Google Image Search is pretty powerful but the Advanced Image Search is even more so as you can tailor your search to include (or NOT include as you needs dictate) such parameters as:
THIS JUST IN!! Earlier this week, Google released a new option for Google Image Search. Click on the small camera in the right of the search box in Google Image Search and you can now upload an image, take a photo with a webcam or point to one on the web to use in your search. How cool is that? Of course, this is pretty similar to Google Goggles, which has been around for iPhone and Android for a while.
For even easier image searching, , download the Chrome extension or the Firefox extension. These browser extensions allow you to right-click on a web image and search Google with that image.
Let’s try with something a little recognizable:

Picnik was bought by Google and is a great way to edit photos online. While it is not Photoshop, for cropping, adding text to images and other basic editing, it is pretty hard to beat the price (free!)
The free version allows for basic editing options like cropping, rotate, adjusting exposure, red eye reduction and so on. You can get your images from where you store them, like Picasa Albums (see below), Flickr, Facebook, MySpace and Photobucket or you can upload them from your computer. If you upgrade to the Premium version, you get more fonts, editing tools, stickers and so on. It costs about $25/year.
There are also some browser extensions for working with Picnik inside your web browser as well as these:
You don’t have to even create an account to upload and edit a file. However, if you do create an account, you get access to the Collage tool, printing options and sharing options.
Here is a tutorial movie in case you want to play more with Picnik and cannot remember everything from the workshop!
Picasa was another separate program that was bought by Google several years ago. If you have ever used iPhoto on a Macintosh, Picasa is very similar to that. You can now install it on both PC and Mac. Picasa works with image files on your computer so you can:
