Ask Your Online & Digital Assistants (Ask YODA) – a new series

February 19th, 2008 by Audrey Williams

YodaOur Technology Tuesday and Web Wednesday series came to life in Fall 2000 to help with “Computer Curses, PC Phobias and other High Tech Hysterics” After just over seven years, we have covered more than 65 different topics from burning a CD to microblogging.

It is time to put this series to rest. We know you are wondering: “What, oh what, will take the place of Technology Tuesday and Web Wednesday??” Fret no more!

With all of the technology changes we have had and will have in the near future, we decided to offer our techno-info sessions in the format similar to one of the most popular Technology Tuesday sessions – the “Stump the Chump” forum where you bring your questions and we make up answers. Then, we stole a name from our recent Desire2Learn training and….VOILA!! A new series is born!!!

ANNOUNCING: Ask Your Online & Digital Assistants (Ask YODA)

  • Inaugural Session: Wednesday – February 20 at 12:10 pm
  • WHERE: Goins 232 (the NEW location for the Faculty Multimedia Studio)
  • WHAT: Each month, we will have folks from HelpDesk, Educational Technology Services and Student Services available to help answer your questions about all kinds of technology related matters (from Office 2007 to Banner to D2L to well, whatever). Bring your lunch. Bring your questions. If you cannot make it, email your questions to me and we will get them in the session.

After each session, we will post the questions and answers on the Technology Update blog (THAT’S RIGHT HERE!!!!) to keep everybody who could not make the session in the loop.

But, don’t worry, if you want to know about the past Tech Tuesday/Web Wednesday sessions…we have them archived. You can see all of the past topics at the Tech Tuesday/Web Wednesday Archive Blog – where it is easy to search and browse.

More Online Photo Editing – this time PRO features for FREE!

February 15th, 2008 by Audrey Williams

We talked about Picnik a while ago, which offers basic photo editing right inside Flickr.

Today, Fotoflexer crossed in front of us. On the surface, it is similar to Picnik, but they have opened up their toolset to include some mighty sweet and powerful editing tools – like smart scissors to cutout someone from a background, layers, high resolution mode and more and all for free (well, all for banner ads at the top of the screen while you are editing)

Took a quick spin and, boy, I can see Facebook filling up with edited photos fast. There are the basics like crop, rotate and color adjust. Then, you can move into special tools like borders, effects, text, shapes and then even copy/paste your face into different scenarios and holiday cards.

In less than two minutes, I went from this:

To this:

Upload back to Flickr, Photobucket, Picasa or Facebook. Save as JPEG or PNG or email to somebody. Pretty slick. Here are some tutorials and demos:

February 15th, 2008 by Audrey Williams

Pellissippi State Technical Community College offers a free emergency alert text messaging
service to students, faculty and staff. This optional service will only be used in the event of an on-campus emergency, an unscheduled college closing, or a delay or cancellation of classes due to, for instance, inclement weather. If you have not yet signed up, you can sign up and have these sent to email addresses and/or cell phone via text message.

It also offers RSS feeds so if you want to subscribe via your favorite portal, here are the links.
