Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence has always been an interesting topic for me.  I have spent a pretty decent amount of my own downtime reading things about AI.  I think that it’s one of the most important areas of research.  I believe that in time, AI research will pave the way for new approaches to research on human consciousness.  If neurons can be simulated, what if everything, including ourselves are a simulation in a supercomputer.  And at the end of our life, our consciousness and all the most important things we learned in life carries on to the next simulation through our consciousness.  AI, when perfected, has the potential to change the world, for better or worse.  I’m sure that mankind will prevent the worst from happening (robots become self aware and kill us all).  As moore’s law progresses, we near the emergence of AI.  What I’m genuinely worried about is when AI does come into being, will they exceed human potential?  Of course they will have superior computing capabilities, but they still lack that essential key to being; a consciousness.  I personally can’t wait for the emergence of AI.  It will change the world, most likely uniting most of us under one purpose.

So far

I’m really really enjoying this class.  I am learning exactly what I wanted to learn.  Normally I like to learn things on my own, with google and such, but that’s really just an innefficient way to do it.  With a teacher and peers to guide me and teach me the right way, I am getting much more out of it.  Dr. Brown’s method of teaching is one of the best I’ve ever had.  Whether it’s the fact that the material is much more interesting since I love computers, or if he’s just that good a teacher, I’m pretty excited for the rest of the course.

I really liked the way he discussed the binary system.  This was one of the main things I wished to learn.  I also really liked how well he described the hexadecimal number system.  I had no idea what the hexadecimal system represented.  Anytime I’d try to learn what it meant, I would understand what the letters and numbers stood for, but not what the numbers they stood for stood for.  A mouthfull I know but all I’m saying is I’m glad it didn’t take a lot of effort to learn it from him.

My first blog

My name is Travis.  Let me tell you a little about myself.  I like to read fantasy books.  It seems like less and less people I know read books, I really respect someone who reads.  I like computers and technology.  It’s always been that way, I was always tinkering with computers, all throughout my childhood.  Dad got me my first computer for christmas one year, and then I just started accumulating them.  I have 5 computers in my room.  That may sound like a little much but I really like having that many.  I am a big advocate of open source software.  I believe that it’s just the right way to do it.  Anyone should have the ability to change their own programs, and distribute their own versions, for free preferably.  I use 3 different distributions of linux.  Ubuntu was my first one, centos was my next one and my favorite one would have to be debian.  I am learning how to use bsd.  I like fishing and hunting, going to the beach, hanging with my girlfriend, and hanging out with my friends.  One thing I’m particularly passionate about is marijuana policy.  The world would be a much more accomodating place (in so many ways) if it were legal.  That’s just a little about myself.  I’m looking forward to learning a lot in this class.
